What is Refractive Cataract Surgery?
The expression “Refractive Cataract Surgery” is reflective of the changing philosophy in the treatment of cataracts. The term refraction refers to the bending or focusing of light. In the eye this translates to the prescription placed in either glasses or contact lenses to achieve proper focus.
Traditionally, the entire focus in cataract has been to remove the cloudy natural lens of the eye and clear the vision. Afterwards glasses were prescribed for any residual refractive error. In Refractive Cataract Surgery a number of devices and techniques are employed in an attempt to minimize the need for glasses or contact lenses after surgery. This may include the use of multifocal intraocular lenses that give both near and distance vision without glasses; the use of toric intraocular lens to correct astigmatism; LRI’s (limbal relaxing incisions) to correct astigmatism; or laser procedures like LASIK or PRK to enhance or fine tune the refractive outcomes of cataract surgery. In some cases a combination of these procedures may achieve the best outcomes.
