Hawaii Ophthalmologist on the Differences Between Laser and Traditional Cataract Surgery

Dr. Alan Faulkner of Aloha Laser Vision highlights the key differences between laser and traditional methods of cataract surgery.

Honolulu, HI – Dr. Alan Faulkner, a LASIK and laser eye surgeon in Hawaii, offers both laser and traditional cataract surgery for patients whose vision is affected by cataracts. He explains that both methods offer great results, though they have surgical differences worth exploring.

At Aloha Laser Vision, laser cataract surgery is performed using the LenSx® Femtosecond Laser, which involves an automated surgical process. During traditional cataract surgery, Dr. Faulkner pulls from his extensive surgical experience to provide optimal results. In regard to how the two methods compare, he explains in his latest blog post, “How Cataract Surgery Differs Using a Laser,” the primary difference is that many steps involved in the operation are automated by the laser, including the corneal incision, the opening of the lens, and the softening of the lens.

While Dr. Faulkner believes his patients can greatly benefit from either form of cataract surgery, he notes that patients with astigmatism may be preferred candidates for the laser technique as the laser technology allows him to address both cataracts and astigmatism in one procedure. This, he says, can result in a more comprehensive vision correction without the need for follow-up treatments.

Overall, Dr. Faulkner describes Aloha Laser Vision as an “outcome-based practice.” His team of experienced eye care professionals are devoted to helping patients find the most effective treatment for their unique eye concerns. He encourages anyone suffering from cataracts or wanting to learn more about their treatment options to contact a qualified eye surgeon in order to understand how they may be able to effectively restore their vision.
