Diagnostic Testing
At Aloha Laser Vision we employ a number of sophisticated diagnostic devices to assist us in evaluating and treating patients.
Corneal Topography
Corneal topography devices examine the shape and thickness of the cornea. A number of different devices are used because they differ in technologies and often complement each other. The devices are equipped with sophisticated analytical software that looks for signs of disease or other abnormalities. In addition the data can be used in both cataract and refractive surgery to determine the best method of treatment.
Anterior Segment OCT
The Visante is an ocular coherence tomography (OCT) device that scans the cornea and the anterior portion of the eye in order to generate high resolution images. These images can be used to diagnose diseases as well as other problems in the front of the eye. In addition they can generate detailed thickness maps of the cornea.
Sonomed UBM
The UBM or ultrasonic bio-microsope is another technology used to image the front part of the eye, including areas behind the iris or other structures that block the OCT or direct examination. It is used for more accurate sizing of the Visian ICL phakic lens. It can also be used to image masses or tumors of the anterior segment (front part of the eye).
In addition, using a different probe, the UBM can image the posterior segment or back of the eye. In the case of opaque cataracts, for instance, it can be used to make sure the posterior ocular structures appear normal, that there are no masses or tumors that cannot be directly visualized because of the cataract.
Posterior Segment OCT
The Spectralis, or posterior segment OCT, allows for the imaging of the retina and the optic nerve. Its resolution is so good that changes as small as 5-7 microns can be appreciated. This is comparable to levels of resolution previously only achievable with a biopsy examination of the tissue. This device can be used to examine the retina and optic nerve for a number of disease processes. The information is useful in determining the best treatment for the patient and also to monitor progress in treatment.
IOL Master
The IOL Master is a diagnostic device that measures the length of the eye and other critical parameters, like the depth of the front of the eye, to accurately select the intraocular lens power in cataract surgery. It is also used to calculate the lens power for the Visian ICL in refractive surgery.
