The Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay is an innovative solution for presbyopia, which is an age-related decline in near vision that causes difficulties with reading and seeing things up close. For most individuals, reading glasses can correct presbyopia; however, many men and women desire freedom from the constant on-and-off of readers throughout the day. Raindrop®, a revolutionary corneal inlay, offers a unique long-term treatment option for presbyopia and can significantly reduce or eliminate reliance upon glasses for near vision.

What is the Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay?

The FDA-approved Raindrop® inlay is a clear, microscopic, hydrogel lens that reshapes the cornea to improve near and intermediate eyesight without affecting distance vision. Within about a week after the lens is implanted, patients can enjoy the results of Raindrop®, and nearly all individuals are able to read the newspaper without the help of readers. At Aloha Laser Vision, our eye doctors have had great success with the Raindrop® inlay, and patients have reported a high-rate of satisfaction with both the procedure and device.

Is the Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay Right for Me?

While your eye doctor will ultimately decide whether you are a good candidate, the following questions can help indicate if the Raindrop® inlay may be right for you.

If you have answered yes to all of these questions and have never undergone another procedure like cataract surgery or LASIK, you could be a candidate for the Raindrop® inlay. Your eye doctor at Aloha Laser Vision will perform a full examination to asses your vision correction needs, evaluate your distance vision, measure your pupils, check corneal thickness, and gauge eye moisture levels to make the final determination.

What Can I Expect During the Raindrop® Procedure?

The Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay is only implanted in your non-dominant eye. This strategy allows you to retain good distance vision and improve near vision without the need for much further adjustment. Once you have decided to proceed with treatment, you will be given pre-operative instructions and steroid eye drops to prepare for the procedure. On the day of treatment, your eye doctor will first administer numbing drops to your eyes to eliminate the possibility of discomfort. Next, as you focus on a light and remain still, your doctor will use a laser to create a flap in your cornea through which the Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay will be inserted. Once the inlay has been properly positioned into the middle layer of the cornea, the flap will be replaced and allowed to heal without stitches. The procedure only takes about ten minutes to complete.

Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay Results

When your procedure is complete, your eye will be covered for protection, and antibiotic eyedrops will be prescribed. After just one day, you can typically resume your normal daily activities; however, you will want to pay special attention to any actions which may prevent proper healing. Within a week, you should be able to enjoy the full benefits of Raindrop®. Your follow-up appointments will reveal the progress you have achieved and determine whether you may require any further correction to see most clearly. In clinical trials reported by ReVision Optics®, maker of the Raindrop® inlay, 98% of patients were able to read a newspaper without glasses, 88% could read fine print, and 76% could read email on a screen at two years after surgery.
